The Blues is a strongly weeping selection of Colorado blue spruce with bright blue needles and drooping branches. Its flexible, cascading outline can be allowed to spread along a slope or guided upward by staking the leader to the desired height; the American Conifer Society describes the selection as fast growing, with the terminal leader adding about a foot in a year.
Set it in full sun and well-drained soil. North Carolina State Extension notes that Colorado spruce prefers cool climates and rich, moist soil, and recommends keeping young plants consistently moist; established trees tolerate more drought. [The American Conifer Society’s The Blues profile](https://conifersociety.org/conifers/picea-pungens-the-blues) describes its distinctive weeping form, while [NC State Extension’s blue spruce profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/picea-pungens/) provides species-level site and watering guidance.
## Maintenance
Stake the leader only if a taller focal point is desired, then let side branches cascade. Water young plants through dry weather, remove dead or damaged growth, and avoid pruning away the natural weeping outline.
