Bristlecone Pine Tree

Rocky Mountain bristlecone pine (Pinus aristata) is a slow-growing evergreen conifer with a tapering, twisted trunk and an irregular rounded or flattened crown. Its resin-dotted blue-green needles and sculptural form suit a visible specimen position in a cold-climate garden. ## Form and siting North Carolina State Extension lists a mature range of 8–20 feet high by 10–15 feet wide, full sun, and USDA zones 4a–7b. The American Conifer Society lists Zone 3, so published cold limits differ at the colder edge; use local experience and provide a well-drained site. NC State notes that this pine tolerates dry, infertile, or rocky soils and advises protection from drying winds. ## Garden use Allow the crown to develop its natural uneven outline instead of forcing a clipped shape. Its slow growth makes it manageable in a smaller landscape, but it still needs space for its eventual spread. The twisted trunk and blue-green foliage provide year-round structure. ## Maintenance Water during establishment and prolonged dry weather, then avoid persistently wet soil.
