About Silver Ghost Lacebark Pine

Silver Ghost lacebark pine (Pinus bungeana ‘Silver Ghost’) is an evergreen selection valued for pale, mottled bark that develops stronger silver-gray tones than the species, with stiff green needles in bundles of three. [The American Conifer Society](https://conifersociety.org/conifers/pinus-bungeana-silver-ghost) documents its origin as a seedling selection from Dawes Arboretum, and [The Morton Arboretum](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/lacebark-pine/) notes the cultivar’s silvery bark. ## Placement Set this tree where the trunk can be viewed as it develops; its distinctive bark is the main ornamental feature. Use it as a specimen with room for the broad crown, in full sun and in a sheltered location where limbs are less exposed to heavy snow or ice. Growth rate is described as typical of the species, so allow space for a large tree rather than treating it as a dwarf selection. ## Soil and water Choose moist, well-drained soil and water young plants during dry periods as roots establish. Avoid waterlogged ground. The bark pattern strengthens with age, so a young plant may not yet show the mature silvery effect. ## Maintenance Prune selectively to remove damaged branches or gradually expose the trunk. Avoid topping or shearing the crown; the tree’s natural form and mature bark are best shown with restrained pruning.
