About Compact Tanyosho Pine

Compact Tanyosho is a compact-growing form of Japanese red pine with evergreen green needles, attractive reddish-brown bark, and a broad umbrella-like silhouette. It is sold as *Pinus densiflora* ‘Umbraculifera Compacta’, a distinct selection from the larger, less compact Tanyosho Pine. ## Form and Placement Plan for a mature plant about 12 feet tall and 18 feet wide, allowing its canopy to spread without crowding paths or nearby trees. Its slow growth and multi-trunked shape suit a specimen planting or a large container where there is adequate root space. [Monrovia](https://www.monrovia.com/compact-tanyosho-japanese-red-pine.html) identifies this selection and gives the mature dimensions; [Whispering Hills Nursery](https://whisperinghillsnursery.com/compact-tanyosho-pine/) also describes its umbrella form. ## Growing Conditions Choose full sun and slightly acidic, well-drained soil. The cultivar is listed for USDA zones 4–7. Avoid waterlogged ground; in a container, use a free-draining medium and a pot with open drainage. ## Maintenance Water when the upper soil begins to dry, with more frequent checks for container-grown plants and during establishment. Once established, prune only to remove damaged or crossing branches or to manage the chosen shape. Keep mulch clear of the trunk.
