Limber pine (Pinus flexilis) is an evergreen western North American pine with needles that have a slight blue-green cast. It grows slowly into an open, spreading crown that can flatten at the top with age. [University of Illinois Extension](https://web.extension.illinois.edu/treeselector/detail_plant.cfm?PlantID=242) lists a 30–50-foot mature height, USDA zones 4–7, and full sun to partial shade; it also notes that the species tolerates dry sites as well as moist, well-drained soils.
## Form and placement
The open branching gives this pine room to read as a specimen, while its evergreen canopy also suits screening, massing, and windbreak plantings. The University of Illinois profile identifies the mature form as open and spreading and lists screen, specimen, and windbreak uses. Its cited 30–50-foot height includes the existing 40-foot record; the recorded 15-foot width is retained as a landscape estimate because the profile does not specify a mature spread.
## Maintenance
Choose a site with drainage and allow the crown to develop naturally. Water during establishment, then adjust irrigation to local rainfall and soil conditions; the species tolerates dry sites but also grows in moist, well-drained soil. Its slow growth means routine pruning is generally unnecessary apart from removing damaged or crossing branches.
