About Compact Gem - Bosnian Pine

Compact Gem is a slow-growing Bosnian pine selected for a narrow, dense, columnar outline and long dark green needles. It offers evergreen vertical structure where a broad, fast-growing pine would be too expansive. ## Landscape Use Use it as a specimen or repeat it in a structured planting, allowing for mature width as well as height. [Iseli Nursery’s plant profile](https://iselinursery.com/colorful-conifers/pinus-pine/pinus-heldreichii-leucodermis-compact-gem/) lists garden size near 12 feet high by 8 feet wide and USDA Zone 5. The [Oregon State selection profile](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/pinus-heldreichii-compact-gem) records a smaller size at ten years, so young-plant dimensions should not be mistaken for mature size. Oregon State notes introduction by Hillier in 1964. ## Growing Conditions Choose a sunny or lightly shaded position with well-drained soil. Its evergreen needles provide year-round structure while the upright branches keep the outline comparatively narrow. Leave room for the broader mature dimensions reported by the grower. ## Maintenance Water regularly while the root system establishes and during prolonged dry spells. Use minimal corrective pruning, removing damaged or crossing growth while retaining the natural columnar crown.
