About Formal Form Bristlecone Pine

‘Formal Form’ is a slow-growing, narrow upright bristlecone pine with blue-green needles and a uniform vertical outline. [Iseli Nursery’s cultivar page](https://iselinursery.com/colorful-conifers/pinus-pine/pinus-longaeva-formal-form/) identifies it as *Pinus longaeva* ‘Formal Form’ and describes a compact garden-size tree suited to a sunny site. ## Form and placement Iseli lists a garden size of about 10 ft tall by 6 ft wide and annual growth of 6–8 inches. The current catalog dimensions closely match that guidance. Use it as an upright evergreen specimen or accent where its distinctive form can be seen, allowing room for the mature spread rather than shearing it into shape. The blue-green needles provide color and texture throughout the year. ## Growing conditions The breeder recommends full sun and lists USDA zone 4. The narrow, regular habit and restrained growth are useful where a conifer’s vertical form is desired without the pace of a fast-growing screen. Avoid assuming the plant tolerates wet or poorly drained soil, since the cultivar page does not specify that condition. ## Maintenance Iseli notes little or no pruning is needed. Plant in full sun, water during establishment, and maintain a well-drained root zone. Remove damaged branches if necessary while preserving the natural upright outline.
