About Bristlecone Pine

Joe’s Bess is a slow-growing, formal selection of bristlecone pine with dense clusters of two-toned green needles along ascending branches. Its compact outline and measured growth suit a specimen position where its evergreen structure can be appreciated up close; [Sooner Plant Farm’s exact-selection profile](https://www.soonerplantfarm.com/plant/pine-bristlecone-joes-bess) identifies the selection as Pinus longaeva 'Joe’s Bess' and gives a mature estimate of 5–6 feet tall by 3–4 feet wide. ## Landscape use Use Joe’s Bess as a small conifer specimen in a rock garden, courtyard, or mixed evergreen bed. The upright, dense branching gives it a defined silhouette without the scale of a large forest pine. Its fine needles and compact form make it easy to place near paths or patios where the shape can be seen. ## Site and growth Give it a sunny position and soil that drains freely. It grows slowly, so allow time for the plant to develop its shape rather than expecting quick screening. The nursery source notes the origin of the selection to Jean Iseli and identifies Iseli Nursery as its brand. ## Maintenance Joe’s Bess needs little shaping once established. Avoid routine shearing; remove only damaged or misplaced growth when necessary, and keep the root area from remaining waterlogged. Allow room for the eventual 3–4-foot spread. [NVK Nurseries’ plant profile](https://www.nvknurseries.com/plant/Pinus-longaeva-Joes-Bess) also describes the upright form, slow growth, and well-drained soil preference.
