About Japanese White Pine

‘Glauca’ is a blue-needled Japanese white pine selection with a dense conical outline when young that becomes broader and more spreading as it matures. The RHS profile estimates a mature height and spread of about 33–50 feet, while the catalog’s numeric dimensions are unset, so the size is presented as a supported range. ## Appearance Stiff, silvery blue-green needles grow in groups of five at the tips of new stems and give the canopy a ruffled texture. Oval reddish-brown cones may persist on the branches for several years, adding seasonal detail to the evergreen crown. ## Growing Conditions Grow in full sun and well-drained soil; the RHS lists loam and sand and prefers neutral to acidic conditions. The profile describes the selection as drought resistant, but young plants still need regular water while roots establish. ## Maintenance No routine pruning is required. Remove damaged or crossing branches only when needed, and allow enough room for the tree’s broad mature spread.
