About Blue Dwarf Japanese Stone Pine

Blue Dwarf Japanese stone pine is a slow-growing, low-spreading evergreen with blue-green needles. Utah State University identifies the selection as Pinus pumila 'Blue Dwarf' and gives a mature range of 2–3 feet tall by 4–7 feet wide; the height range is shown in inches to preserve the catalog’s unit convention. ## Appearance The plant grows wider than it is tall, with soft needles in bundles of five and purple cones that mature to reddish brown. Its compact, spreading outline adds cool-toned texture to rock gardens and small conifer plantings. ## Growing Conditions Choose full sun with well-drained soil, and site it where it is protected from harsh winter winds and hot summer-afternoon exposure. Utah State lists USDA Zones 4–7 and medium water use. Water regularly while the plant establishes, then maintain even moisture without allowing standing water. ## Maintenance This slow-growing form needs little shaping. Remove damaged tips or branches as needed and preserve its naturally low, spreading habit.
