Eastern White Pine Tree

Eastern white pine is a long-lived evergreen native to eastern North America, with soft, flexible blue-green needles held in bundles of five. Young trees have a pyramidal outline that broadens into an irregular crown with age, giving this species a light, fine-textured presence in large landscapes. ### Growing conditions It grows in full sun or part shade and prefers cool, humid conditions with moist, well-drained soil. The species tolerates a range of soils, although well-drained sandy and gravelly sites are common in parts of its range. Mature trees develop a substantial, broad crown, so allow ample room in large landscapes. ### Landscape use Give it space as a specimen, in woodland planting, or as a high screen where its mature breadth can be accommodated. It can also be maintained as a hedge, but shearing changes its natural form. The five-needle clusters and evergreen crown provide texture through the year. ## Maintenance Water consistently during establishment and during extended dry weather, especially on freely draining soils. Keep competing vegetation away from the young trunk and prune only to remove damaged branches or manage clearance. Avoid salty or strongly alkaline sites.
