Create design onlineAbout Columnar Scotch Pine Tree
Columnar Scots pine is an evergreen selection of Pinus sylvestris with a narrow upright crown and twisted blue-green needles. Published mature-size estimates vary: the RHS gives 4–8 m tall by 1–1.5 m wide, while Utah State University's arboretum lists 20–25 ft by 6–8 ft, so treat dimensions as approximate.
## Appearance
Tight ascending branches keep the silhouette vertical, and the paired needles carry a distinct pale stomatal line. The narrow form works as a specimen or screen where a broad crown would occupy too much space.
## Growing Conditions
Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. The RHS allows a broad range of soil textures; Utah State reports that the pine adapts to different soils but needs good drainage. Its arboretum profile lists medium water use and USDA Zones 3–7. Water through establishment and protect branches from heavy snow where practical.
## Maintenance
The RHS says routine pruning is unnecessary. Remove dead or broken branches, and avoid cutting into old wood. Keep the catalog's size values as approximate estimates rather than treating them as fixed mature limits.
