About French Blue Scotch Pine

French Blue is a blue-needled selection of Scots pine with a more uniform outline than the species. Mature-size references range from about 40–60 ft tall by 20–25 ft wide to 60 ft by 25 ft; these are approximate long-term dimensions, and trained nursery forms remain smaller. ## Appearance The blue-green needles retain their color through winter, and the tree develops a regular, upright to pyramidal crown. It can serve as a specimen or screen where there is room for a large conifer. ## Growing Conditions Choose full sun to retain the strongest blue coloring. Provide well-drained soil and water deeply during the first growing season; once established, reduce watering frequency. The Chicago Botanic Garden lists USDA Zones 2–8 and notes that this pine can tolerate acidic or poorly drained soil when planted on a slight rise. ## Maintenance Routine pruning is not needed for a natural form. If maintaining a topiary shape, prune selectively to control its outline. Allow generous room for the mature crown and avoid persistently waterlogged roots.
