About ʻAwa (Kava)

A tropical, upright shrub of the pepper family with jointed stems, broad heart-shaped bright green leaves and narrow, inconspicuous yellow-green flower spikes. Cultivated throughout the Pacific and carried to Hawaiʻi by Polynesian voyagers, ʻawa has longstanding cultural use in ceremonial beverages. Grow in a warm, humid site with constant moisture, good drainage and partial shade. Cultivated plants are generally propagated vegetatively.
