Create design onlineAbout Black Pepper Plant
Black pepper is a tropical climbing shrub grown for its round fruits, the peppercorns used as a spice. Kew describes it as a climber that can reach 10 metres or more when given support; fruit color and processing determine whether peppercorns are sold as black, white, or green pepper.
### Growth and use
Train the woody stems over a sturdy trellis, frame, or other support. The glossy leaves are dark green above and paler beneath, and flowering spikes carry small pale flowers followed by berries that ripen red. In gardens it can be grown as a container vine or on a trellis where warmth and space are available.
### Growing conditions
The species belongs to the wet tropical biome. NParks recommends bright but indirect light, fertile well-drained soil, and moderate water; its local garden profile reports smaller 3–4.5-metre plants, illustrating how trained garden size can differ from long climbing stems in tropical conditions.
## Maintenance
Keep the root zone evenly moist but well drained, and secure new stems to their support as they grow. Prune to manage the vine and maintain airflow. Protect it from cold; outside warm tropical conditions, grow it in a container that can be moved to shelter.
