Create design onlineAbout Plumeria
Plumeria is a tropical genus of shrubs and small trees grown for fragrant flowers, glossy foliage, and sculptural branches. Species and cultivars vary in habit, flower color, and seasonal behavior, so the dimensions here remain broad garden estimates rather than a universal size for every plumeria.
## Form and Placement
The [NParks Plumeria profile](https://www.nparks.gov.sg/florafaunaweb/flora/8/6/8620) describes small to medium trees with variable form and flowers in white, yellow, red, pink, and bicolored combinations. The [Plumeria Society of America](https://theplumeriasociety.org/basic-care-requirements-for-plumeria/) discusses container growing as well as planting outdoors in warm regions. Use a sunny, protected position and allow for a woody crown rather than crowding it close to paths.
## Growing Conditions
Plumerias grow best in full sun and well-drained soil. [UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions](https://gardeningsolutions.ifas.ufl.edu/plants/ornamentals/plumeria/) recommends USDA zones 10b–11 and notes that cold-sensitive plants can be grown in containers and brought indoors in colder areas. Established plants tolerate some drought, but still need watering during establishment and prolonged dry weather.
## Maintenance
Keep the root zone well drained and avoid leaving pots in standing water. In climates with frost, protect or move container plants before cold weather; handle cut branches carefully because the milky sap can irritate skin.
