About Brown Pine

Brown pine, also called plum pine or she pine, is an Australian conifer with flattened green leaves and colorful fleshy structures associated with its seeds. It is a podocarp rather than a Pinus pine. [Kew](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/120790-3) accepts Podocarpus elatus, native to northern and eastern Australia, and lists Nageia elata and Margbensonia elata as synonyms. [Paten Park Native Nursery](https://ppnn.org.au/plant-info/podocarpus-elatus/) describes a potentially large tree to 40 m, with coppery new growth and blue-black fleshy seed structures that attract birds. Its cultivation listing recommends filtered light to shade and adaptable but well-drained soil. The nursery also records butterfly associations, tolerance of clay and use in rainforest-style gardens. These qualities do not reduce the eventual space needed by a full-sized tree. The maximum height is retained to distinguish the species from smaller clipped podocarps and named garden selections. Match the mature canopy and root area to the site. Food references for podocarps require care about the exact plant part; this profile does not treat the whole seed-bearing structure as an ordinary berry. No flowering-plant bloom color is assigned to this conifer. [Queensland’s 2020 bushfire guide](https://www.qra.qld.gov.au/sites/default/files/2020-12/0576_qra_bushfire_guideline_v10_pages_print.pdf), Appendix E, page 136, includes this species. Its list is a general guide requiring independent assessment of fire resistance and suitability for the specific location. All plants can burn under extreme heat or flame. This source tag records inclusion, not a tested flammability class or a guarantee of protection. Choose a suitable mature size and position, keep plants in good condition, and remove dead growth and accumulated litter.
