About Happy Trails™ Rosita Portulaca

Happy Trails™ Rosita is a named Portulaca grandiflora selection in PanAmerican Seed’s trailing Happy Trails line. PanAmerican Seed describes Rosita as a distinctive color in the trailing portulaca range without naming a specific hue. The breeder profile lists summer, late-summer, and autumn bloom, and gives a compact mature size of 6–9 inches high by 14–18 inches wide. [PanAmerican Seed product profile](https://www.panamseed.com/Products/050906324004745/portulaca-happy-trails-rosita/) ## Appearance The low, spreading stems carry fleshy leaves and open flowers in bright sun. The RHS describes Portulaca grandiflora as an annual with green succulent foliage and flowers that open in sunlight. Its published species dimensions span 0.1–0.5 metres in both height and spread, while the Happy Trails profile gives the more specific range for this selection. ## Growing Conditions Plant in full sun after frost in a well-drained site. The RHS lists chalk, loam, and sandy soils, and notes that the species grows in poor sandy ground. Allow about 18 inches between plants for the trailing stems to spread. Remove faded flowers when seed is not wanted; the RHS notes that the species may self-seed in place. Let the season’s display finish before replacing the annual planting.
