Elephant bush (Portulacaria afra) is a branching, woody succulent with small glossy leaves and reddish young stems. In frost-free gardens it can become a substantial shrub, while containers make it easier to protect in colder climates; allow roughly 8–15 feet of height and 3–5 feet of spread in a warm landscape. [University of Wisconsin Extension](https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/elephant-bush-portulacaria-afra/) describes its use as a seasonal accent or houseplant and notes that mature ground-grown plants can reach 8–15 feet.
## Form and placement
Use it as a sculptural container specimen, bonsai subject, or informal hedge where winter temperatures stay mild. Bright sun to partial shade supports growth. Its fleshy stems and leaves store water, but the plant is not a cold-hardy outdoor shrub; move container plants indoors before frost.
## Growing conditions
Choose a freely draining mix and a pot with drainage holes. [RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/13534/portulacaria-afra/details) recommends loam or sand with well-drained conditions and describes small pale pink summer flower clusters. [NParks](https://www.nparks.gov.sg/florafaunaweb/flora/2/3/2361) also identifies it as a drought-tolerant succulent suitable for bonsai and containers.
## Maintenance
Let the mix dry between thorough waterings, then reduce watering in cool, low-light months. Pinch or prune stems to shape the branching framework; cuttings root readily in warm conditions. Avoid leaving the root ball wet, especially during winter.
