About Rainbow Bush

Rainbow Bush is the variegated form of Portulacaria afra, a succulent with fleshy leaves edged in cream. NParks also records Rainbow Bush and Variegated Elephant’s Food among its common names for this form. ## Foliage and flowers The [Royal Horticultural Society profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/237715/portulacaria-afra-variegata-v/details) describes evergreen, bushy growth, silvery-green leaves with cream margins, and small pale-pink flowers. It gives a mature range of 2.5–4 metres high and 1–1.5 metres wide. [NParks’ Flora and Fauna Web profile](https://www.nparks.gov.sg/florafaunaweb/flora/2/3/2362) identifies the variegated plant as Rainbow Bush and notes its succulent, drought-tolerant character. ## Growing conditions The RHS recommends a bright position with partial shade and well-drained loam or sandy soil. It is often grown as a houseplant; bright indirect light and free drainage are useful indoors. ## Maintenance Water thoroughly during active growth from mid-spring to mid-autumn, then water very sparingly at other times. Let the compost drain freely and avoid waterlogged roots.
