About Abiu Tree

Abiu is the tropical fruit tree Pouteria caimito, valued for its sweet, soft yellow fruit. It grows best in hot, humid conditions and needs protection from cold and strong wind. ## Placement and growing University of Florida IFAS describes Abiu as a medium to large tree, commonly 30–40 feet tall in Florida and capable of becoming much taller in some regions. Its pyramidal or oval canopy needs generous space: the extension guide recommends planting at least 25 feet from nearby trees and structures when trees are not regularly pruned. Choose a warm, wind-protected location in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. The ripe fruit is pale to bright yellow outside, with translucent, soft, sweet pulp. Fruit size and quality vary greatly among seedlings, so a grafted selection can provide more predictable fruit. The tree is sensitive to cool temperatures; young trees can be killed by freezing, and mature trees are injured by near-freezing weather. This makes a warm tropical or protected subtropical site important. The [UF/IFAS Abiu guide](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/HS300) covers the species, climate, fruit, spacing, soil, planting, irrigation, and pruning. ## Maintenance Water newly planted trees frequently while roots establish, then water young trees during prolonged dry periods. Mature trees benefit from irrigation during drought, especially through flowering and fruit development. Prune selectively to maintain a manageable framework, mulch the root area without piling mulch against the trunk, and protect the trunk from lawn equipment.
