Prairie Winds® ‘Desert Plains’ is a named Pennisetum alopecuroides fountain grass with an upright, vase-shaped clump. Proven Winners describes dusky-purple bottlebrush flowers that age to tan and green foliage that turns red, orange, and gold in fall; its plant page lists a 3–4 foot mature height and spread and hardiness zones 5A–9B.
## Growing Conditions
Give this large ornamental grass full sun and rich, well-drained soil; it does not tolerate wet ground. Use it as a fall focal point or in a mass planting, allowing room for the clump to mature. The cultivar’s height and spread ranges are approximate.
## Maintenance
Leave the foliage through winter if desired, then cut it back before new growth begins in spring. See the [Proven Winners Desert Plains plant page](https://www.provenwinners.com/plants/pennisetum/prairie-winds-desert-plains-fountain-grass-pennisetum-alopecuroides) for cultivar details, size, and growing guidance.
