Primula elatior, the oxlip also called great cowslip or true oxlip, is a spring-flowering woodland perennial with a low rosette of green leaves and clusters of nodding, soft-yellow flowers. Its flowers sit on upright stems and have a deeper golden eye; the species is distinct from the common cowslip, Primula veris, whose flower clusters have a different form. It suits a moist, partly shaded border or naturalistic planting where its early-season flowers can be appreciated.
## Garden character
Allow about 6–12 inches for mature height and spread. The plant forms a clump and may remain semi-evergreen. Bees and butterflies visit the flowers, which are lightly fragrant. It is commonly grown in woodland settings and shaded borders; established plants are generally avoided by deer and rabbits.
## Growing conditions
Give it humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. Partial shade is a reliable site; it can grow in full sun in cooler climates if the soil remains moist. The recorded hardiness range is USDA zones 4–8. See the [North Carolina Extension profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/primula-elatior/) for identification, habitat, and cultivation details.
## Maintenance
Keep soil evenly moist, especially in sunny sites, and remove spent flower stems if you want a tidier display.
