Baker’s loulu (Pritchardia bakeri) is an endemic palm tree from Oʻahu. It has coarse, fan-shaped leaves with glossy green upper surfaces and silvery gray undersides, and its flowers are showy and yellow.
The Native Hawaiʻi Plants profile places the species in wet, exposed forest and grassy areas on the Koʻolau range. Mature plants are listed in small and medium tree classes, spanning roughly 15 to 50 feet. The palms’ large fronds and tree-size form suit spacious tropical settings, where the crown can stand clear of buildings, paths, and other plants. Its wet forest habitat points to a site with reliable moisture and room for the crown.
Baker’s loulu is also called loulu. Its fronds create a strong structural presence, while the silver underside can be seen when leaves move in the breeze. The species’ natural habitat is wet and often exposed, so site choice should account for both moisture and airflow.
See the [Native Hawaiʻi Plants profile for Pritchardia bakeri](https://nativeplants.hawaii.edu/plants/pritchardia-bakeri/) for its Oʻahu range, flower and leaf descriptions, and habitat.
## Maintenance
Keep young palms from drying during establishment, then adjust watering to local rainfall while maintaining good drainage. Allow generous overhead and lateral clearance for the fan leaves and mature trunk.
