About Pritchardia beccariana

Pritchardia beccariana, known in Hawaiʻi as loulu and Beccari’s loulu, is an endemic palm from wet forests on Hawaiʻi Island. Native Hawaiʻi Plants describes it as a specimen tree with a mature canopy about 12–15 feet wide, moist growing conditions, well-drained cinder soil, and full or partial sun ([species profile](https://nativeplants.hawaii.edu/plants/pritchardia-beccariana/)). ## Form and Placement The rounded crown carries large, fan-shaped leaves and gives a mature tree a distinctive tropical silhouette. The Hawaiʻi profile groups mature heights from 30–50 feet and above 50 feet, so allow generous vertical clearance; its reported canopy width is narrower than many landscape trees. Use it as a long-term specimen where the climate can support a tropical palm and the site has room for the crown. ## Growing Conditions Although the species occurs in wet forest, the profile also calls for good drainage. Maintain evenly moist soil while preventing standing water around the root zone. Full or partial sun is suitable, with protection from direct sun in hotter areas and shelter from wind. The [Bishop Museum flora record](https://www.plantsofhawaii.org/detail/%7B24F02F2E-7965-488E-8ED3-6045A9E60871%7D) documents the species and its Hawaiian occurrence. ## Maintenance Keep the root area consistently moist and well drained while the palm establishes. Preserve space around the trunk and crown as it matures, and avoid planting where strong winds or reflected heat are difficult to manage.
