About Pritchardia hillebrandii

Hillebrand’s loulu (Pritchardia hillebrandii), also called loulu lelo, is a fan palm native to Molokaʻi. Its broad, wavy leaves have green upper surfaces and a gray-green, waxy underside, while its pale flowers range from white to yellow. The Native Hawaiʻi Plants profile lists full or partial sun, well-drained soil, and coastal tolerance to some salt spray. It recommends the palm as a specimen or shade tree. Reported mature height varies: the profile classifies it among 30–50-foot trees, while its landscape notes describe cultivated plants nearer 20 feet. Allow room for a substantial crown and check the mature size of nursery stock before planting. The canopy spread is reported at about 4–7 feet. Loulu lelo grows naturally near the coast and produces small fruits after sporadic flowering. Its coarse, fan-shaped foliage gives the plant its main landscape presence, with the silvered leaf undersides especially visible in bright, open sites. Hillebrand’s loulu is also cultivated in botanical gardens and warm landscapes. The [Native Hawaiʻi Plants profile for Pritchardia hillebrandii](https://nativeplants.hawaii.edu/plants/pritchardia-hillebrandii/) covers its names, size, flowers, light, soil, and landscape uses. ## Maintenance Provide free-draining soil and water established plants according to local conditions. Remove fully dry or damaged leaves as needed, and leave enough space for the canopy to develop.
