Loulu hiwa (Pritchardia martii) is a Hawaiian fan palm native to Oʻahu. Its size varies considerably, with mature plants documented from about 3 to 10 meters tall.
The National Tropical Botanical Garden records this species in mesic forest on steep ridges, cliffs, and valleys of the Koʻolau Range, often among ʻōhiʻa or koa forest. Its large folded fronds are divided into many segments, giving the crown the rounded fan shape associated with loulu palms. The fruit is oval and several centimeters long. These traits make it a bold canopy palm for warm landscapes with ample room above and around the planting.
Loulu hiwa is one of the vernacular names for Pritchardia martii. The natural habitat is moderate-moisture forest rather than dry scrub, so establish it where irrigation can keep young roots from drying without leaving the soil waterlogged. Because stature varies, allow generous clearance overhead and on all sides.

## Maintenance
Water young palms through establishment and during extended dry spells. Maintain good drainage, leave clearance for the mature crown, and remove only fully dry or damaged fronds.
