Moongold is a cold-climate apricot selected by the University of Minnesota for dependable fruit in northern gardens. Its fragrant spring flowers need a compatible apricot nearby: Moongold is not self-fruitful, and the University of Minnesota identifies Sungold as a suitable pollinizer. [UMN’s apricot guide](https://mnhardy.umn.edu/apricots) describes its late-July, freestone fruit, while the [City of Fort Collins profile](https://apps.fcgov.com/plant-list/?view=970-moongold-edible-apricot) records its edible fruit, pink flowers, green leaves, and local mature dimensions.
## Size and season
Published size estimates vary: Fort Collins lists 15–20 ft tall and 10–20 ft wide, while UMN reports a more compact 10–15 ft height. The current 15–25 ft height label accommodates that documented variation; actual size depends on site and care. UMN lists hardiness zones 4–8 and a late-July harvest in Minnesota; bloom and ripening dates shift elsewhere.
## Placement
Choose a sunny, well-drained site and plan space for both this tree and its pollinizer. Apricots bloom early, so a sheltered location can reduce frost exposure, although no site removes freeze risk.
## Maintenance
Keep young trees evenly watered while they establish and as fruit develops. Follow local apricot pruning guidance during dry weather, and clear fallen fruit where it could attract wildlife or create a slippery surface.
