Pioneer Apricot Fruit Tree

Pioneer, also sold as Pioneer Chinese, is a late-blooming apricot suited to cooler sites and higher elevations where spring frost threatens earlier flowers. It bears sweet, juicy golden fruit in mid-summer and is self-fruitful, though another apricot flowering nearby can improve the crop. Its spring blossoms are described as pink to white. ## Garden Use Plant Pioneer in a sunny home orchard or edible landscape, allowing room for a mature fruit tree and access for harvest. The fruit is useful for fresh eating and household preserving. ## Growing Conditions Use full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Later bloom can help reduce exposure to late frost compared with earlier apricots, but flowers and young fruit can still be damaged by cold. Keep the root zone evenly watered while the tree establishes and during dry weather. ## Maintenance Train young branches into a strong, open framework. Prune selectively during the dormant season or after harvest, and remove damaged wood. A compatible apricot that flowers at the same time may improve yield.
