Sungold is a University of Minnesota apricot cultivar with an upright habit and a cold-climate selection history. Its small fruit has yellow skin with a red blush and sweet, mild yellow flesh; the tree is listed at up to 15 feet tall and ripens in early August in Minnesota.
## Placement
Choose the sunniest site available with soil that drains freely, and leave room for a mature tree whose spread can approach its height. Sungold is self-unfruitful: plant a compatible apricot such as Moongold nearby for cross-pollination and fruit set. Its early spring bloom makes a protected site useful where late frosts are common.
## Harvest
The freestone fruit can be eaten fresh or saved for preserves and sauces. The [University of Minnesota variety profile](https://mnhardy.umn.edu/apricots) describes Sungold's bloom timing and fruit, while [UMN Extension's stone-fruit guide](https://extension.umn.edu/garden-and-home/yard-and-garden/gardening-in-minnesota/growing-stone-fruits-in-the-home-garden) covers placement, watering, and pruning.
## Maintenance
Water a newly planted tree regularly, especially in its first year and during hot, dry weather. Prune annually after the coldest part of winter has passed and before buds open, using an open-center structure to admit light.
