‘Brooks’ is a sweet-cherry cultivar selected for large, firm, sweet fruit and an early harvest. UC Davis Foundation Plant Services records its parentage as ‘Rainier’ × ‘Early Burlat’ and notes that it blooms shortly before ‘Bing’ and is not self-compatible. ## Site and fruiting
Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Because ‘Brooks’ is not self-compatible, provide a compatible pollinizer such as one recommended by UC Davis, and confirm bloom overlap for the local climate. Its harvest is typically earlier than ‘Bing’; exact timing varies by site and season. Rootstock and training influence mature size, so retain the cultivar’s approximate garden dimensions as a guide rather than a fixed maximum.
## Maintenance
Water regularly during establishment and fruit development, keeping soil moist but well drained. Train young trees to a balanced framework and prune in dry weather using local stone-fruit guidance. Pick cherries when ripe and protect the crop from birds if necessary. UC Davis also lists “Selection 12-28” as a synonym; that alternate name can help when comparing nursery records.
