Create design onlineAbout Combination Cherry Fruit Tree
Combination Cherry describes a sweet cherry tree carrying several grafted varieties on one plant. This format can provide more than one fruit type in a compact planting. Because graft combinations differ, check the nursery label for the varieties on this tree and their pollination compatibility before planting.
## Site and Pollination
Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil that holds moisture through the growing season. Sweet cherries bloom in spring with white flowers. Some combination trees are assembled with varieties that pollinate one another, but compatibility and bloom overlap depend on the actual grafts. Oregon State notes that sweet cherries need substantial winter chilling; local climate and rootstock also affect performance and mature size.
## Maintenance
Water deeply during establishment and keep soil evenly moist as fruit develops. Prune to maintain a strong framework and keep the canopy open to light and air. Remove broken or crowded branches and protect ripening fruit from birds. Keep a record of the individual grafts because their harvest timing and care needs may differ.
