About Carolina Cherry Laurel

Carolina cherry laurel (Prunus caroliniana) is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to the southeastern United States. Its glossy leaves form a dense, pyramidal to rounded crown, and crushing a fresh leaf releases a maraschino-cherry scent. North Carolina Extension reports plants growing rapidly to about 35 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide. Small, fragrant white flowers appear in spring, followed by fruits that are used by birds. Full sun is preferred, with partial shade tolerated where soil stays moist and well drained. Established plants handle dry periods and can be pruned heavily. Use it for a hedge, screen, foundation planting, woodland edge, or specimen where there is room for its mature crown. The species can sucker and self-seed, so check around the planting and remove unwanted seedlings. The NC Extension profile notes toxic characteristics; keep fruits away from children and pets. The [North Carolina Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/prunus-caroliniana/) provides identification, landscape use, and growing guidance. ## Maintenance Water during establishment and extended dry weather, then rely on rainfall where conditions permit. Prune to control size after flowering, and remove suckers or seedlings before they spread.
