Newport is a rounded flowering plum with bronzy young leaves that mature to dark reddish purple and pale pink to dull white flowers that open shortly before the foliage. Oregon State University treats this selection as *Prunus* ‘Newport’ because of its complex parentage; nursery size descriptions range from about 15–20 feet to 25–30 feet tall. ## Garden use
Newport was developed at the University of Minnesota from a cross involving ‘Omaha’ and *P. cerasifera* ‘Pissardii’. It works as a flowering specimen or as part of a mixed border, with summer foliage and purple fruit adding interest after the flowers fade. The cited sources differ on mature size; choose a site with generous room for a broad, rounded crown. It prefers sun and well-drained soil and is one of the hardier flowering-plum selections.
## Maintenance
Prune after flowering when shaping is needed, since later pruning removes potential flower buds. Water during establishment and dry spells, and keep soil well drained. The University of Minnesota profile lists zones 4–8, while Brighter Blooms lists 4–10; local winter exposure and site conditions can affect performance.
