Montmorency is a classic tart cherry with white spring flowers and bright red fruit with firm yellow flesh and a tangy flavor. UC Davis Foundation Plant Services describes it as self-compatible and naturally semi-dwarf, while Stark Bro’s lists zones 4–7 and size choices from dwarf to standard. ## Garden use
Plant in full sun and well-drained soil for reliable growth and fruiting. Montmorency is widely used for pies, preserves, juice, freezing, and fresh eating. It can pollinate itself, though a nearby compatible cherry can improve yields. Mature size depends on the form selected: Stark Bro’s lists standard trees at 15–18 feet, semi-dwarf at 12–15 feet, and dwarf trees at 8–10 feet.
## Maintenance
Water regularly while young and during fruit development, but avoid waterlogged soil. Keep the canopy open to promote airflow and harvest fruit when fully colored. UC Davis notes a mid-July harvest and high yields; timing varies with climate.
