About North Star Cherry Tree

North Star is a compact tart cherry with large, bright-red fruit and a reliable crop for a small garden. The University of Minnesota describes its white spring flowers, June harvest, self-pollination, and mature size of about 7–9 feet. ## Fruit and Pollination North Star can set fruit without another cherry cultivar nearby. The sour cherries are useful fresh, cooked, or preserved; protect the ripening crop from birds and pick fruit as it colors. The university profile lists USDA zones 4–8 and notes that the plant grows best in full sun and moist, well-drained soil. ## Site Choose a sheltered sunny location with soil that drains freely. Avoid persistently wet ground, which the University of Minnesota lists as a poor fit for this selection. Its compact form makes it suitable where a standard-sized fruit tree would take too much space. ## Maintenance Water during establishment and keep the root zone evenly moist in dry periods. Prune to remove dead or crossing wood and maintain a strong open framework. Watch for common cherry problems such as brown rot, black knot, leaf spot, and fruit-feeding insects.
