Green Gage is a European dessert plum prized for small to medium, yellow-green fruit with very sweet, juicy amber flesh. The tree produces an abundant spring bloom and is self-fertile, though another European plum can improve the crop.
## Fruit and placement
[UC Davis Foundation Plant Services](https://fps.ucdavis.edu/treedetails.cfm?v=734) lists Reine Claude Green Gage, Reine Claude, and Bavay’s among its names and records the cultivar as freestone. [Oak Summit Nursery](https://oaksummitnursery.ca/products/green-gage-plum-prunus-domestica) describes the classic fruit as a sweet dessert plum and recommends full sun and well-drained soil. It also notes that frost pockets can affect performance. Mature size estimates vary with source and growing conditions, so allow room for a full fruit tree.
## Garden use
Use the tree where its spring flowers and later fruit can be enjoyed and harvested. Allow airflow through the canopy and avoid a low site where cold air settles. The round-headed tree may remain relatively low-branched as it matures.
## Maintenance
Water during establishment and dry weather, especially while fruit is developing. Prune to maintain access and remove crowded or damaged branches. Green Gage can be susceptible to brown rot; remove affected fruit and maintain good airflow through the canopy.
