Japanese Flowering Kwanzan Cherry Tree

Kanzan, often spelled Kwanzan, is a deciduous Japanese flowering cherry with upright, ascending branches and heavy clusters of deep pink, double flowers in spring. Oregon State University lists Kwanzan as an older spelling of Prunus serrulata 'Kanzan' and describes bronzy young leaves and orange-bronze fall color. New foliage opens with bronze tones before turning green; autumn color becomes orange to bronze. Its bold flowering display makes it a strong specimen for lawns, parks, and larger gardens. ## Siting Choose a sunny position with moist, well-drained soil and enough space for a spreading crown. Oregon State gives a typical height of 20–25 feet and notes that older trees can grow larger. ## Maintenance Water regularly during establishment and in prolonged dry spells. Prune only to remove damaged or crossing branches, preferably in dry weather, and avoid removing the naturally ascending framework.
