Amur chokecherry (Prunus maackii) is a deciduous ornamental tree valued for glossy cinnamon-brown bark that peels in thin layers. Fragrant creamy-white flower clusters open in late spring, followed by small black fruits that attract birds. ## Site and Seasonal Interest
Grow in full sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained soil with organic matter. It tolerates some neglect and moderate salt exposure, making it useful in challenging urban sites. Its yellow fall foliage is usually modest; the peeling bark remains a strong winter feature. Published mature sizes vary: Wisconsin describes trees commonly around 30 feet in cultivation, while Morton Arboretum lists 35 to 45 feet tall. Allow room for the established canopy. ## Maintenance
Pruning away selected lower branches can reveal the bark once the tree is established. Inspect branches for black knot and other common cherry problems, and remove affected or damaged growth with clean cuts. Moderate growth and a naturally rounded mature crown make this a useful specimen where the trunk can be seen.
