Goldmine is a white-fleshed nectarine that was discovered in a New Zealand garden in the late nineteenth century. Its small-to-medium fruit is freestone, aromatic, juicy and sweet, and the tree is vigorous, productive and self-fruitful.
## Fruit and season
The fruit ripens in August in California and needs about 400 chill hours. Goldmine is a useful choice for fresh eating; its juicy flesh also suits desserts and home preserves. Crop timing and flavor vary with climate, tree age and harvest maturity.
## Growing conditions
Give the tree full sun and well-drained soil. Peaches and nectarines are commonly grafted, and rootstock influences mature size, growth, cold hardiness and soil tolerance. Leave enough room for a vigorous canopy and select rootstock for local soil and climate.
## Maintenance
Water regularly during establishment and when rainfall is limited. Prune to maintain a strong, open canopy that admits light and air, and thin a heavy crop after fruit set. Inspect leaves and fruit through the growing season for leaf curl, brown rot and insect injury.
