Mt. Fuji flowering cherry is a small ornamental deciduous tree with horizontal, spreading branches and white spring flowers. Oregon State lists ‘Shirotae’ as a synonym and describes semi-double blossoms that open before the leaves.
## Site and form
The [Oregon State University profile](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/prunus-serrulata-mt-fuji) describes a typical tree about 12–15 feet tall and 20 feet wide, suited to sun or part shade and hardy to USDA Zone 5. Its flowers are usually semi-double, can be single on young trees, and may turn pinkish just before falling. The source also notes that an occasional tree spreads much farther than the usual size, so allow room for lateral branches. Use it as a flowering specimen where its spring display and broad outline can be seen.
## Maintenance
Provide well-drained soil and water during prolonged dry weather while the tree establishes. Inspect for insect damage, which Oregon State identifies as a concern, and remove dead or crossing branches after bloom. Avoid cutting back the horizontal framework simply to force a narrow shape.
