Prunus spinosa, commonly known as blackthorn, is a dense, deciduous shrub or small tree characterized by its stiff, spiny branches and dark bark. It produces a profusion of delicate white flowers in early spring before its oval, serrated leaves emerge. Thriving in full sun and well-drained soil, it is exceptionally hardy and salt-tolerant, making it ideal for coastal or rural hedging. Its tart, blue-black fruits, known as sloes, are prized for preserves and flavoring spirits.
