Higan cherry (Prunus × subhirtella) is a flowering tree with pink to white blossoms that open in early spring. Its mature size and outline vary among plants and named selections, so allow room for a medium-sized tree.
## Landscape Use
Plant it as a spring-flowering specimen in a lawn, park, or spacious border. The [Morton Arboretum profile](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/higan-cherry/) gives a mature height of 20–40 feet and spread of 15–30 feet, and describes full sun, moist well-drained soil, and hardiness in USDA Zones 5–8. It also notes that the species includes both round and weeping forms. The flowers open before the leaves, followed by red fruit that matures to black.
## Growing Conditions
Choose an open site with full sun for the best flowering and soil that drains while retaining moisture. Avoid treating the size of a named weeping or upright cultivar as universal for every Higan cherry.
## Maintenance
Prune after flowering in spring, as recommended by the [Morton Arboretum](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/higan-cherry/). Monitor the tree during establishment and address damaged or crossing branches while preserving its natural structure.
