About Autumn Cherry Tree

Autumnalis Higan cherry is a small, rounded flowering tree selected for pinkish-white, semi-double blossoms that may appear in fall. It has a non-weeping outline, distinguishing it from the pendulous Higan forms. ## Landscape Use Use it as a small specimen near a path or patio where occasional fall flowers can be noticed. The [University of Illinois woody plant profile](https://woodyplants.nres.uiuc.edu/plant/prusuau01) describes a mature height of 15 feet and notes the alternate name “Jugatsu Sakura.” The [North Carolina Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/prunus-x-subhirtella/) lists Autumnalis among Higan cherry cultivars. Flowering outside the usual spring display is a tendency rather than a guarantee. ## Growing Conditions Provide a sunny site and soil that drains well. Leave room for its rounded crown; avoid placing it where low branches would obstruct a narrow walkway. ## Maintenance Remove broken or crossing branches as needed. If pruning is required, do it after flowering, following the timing recommended for Higan cherry by the [Morton Arboretum](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/higan-cherry/).
