About Weeping Flowering Cherry

Weeping Higan cherry ‘Pendula’ is a deciduous tree whose branches hang in a graceful cascade. Its pale-pink, single flowers open before the leaves in early spring. ## Landscape Use Use it as a specimen where its pendulous crown has room to develop. [Oregon State University’s profile](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/prunus-subhirtella-pendula) identifies Prunus subhirtella ‘Pendula’ and lists Prunus subhirtella var. pendula as a synonym. It describes a typical height of 15–20 feet and notes that plants are usually grafted onto an understock about 5–6 feet high. A separate [Morton Arboretum cultivar account](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/higan-cherry/) gives a taller 25–30-foot grafted form and a 35-foot spread, illustrating how graft height and source conditions affect mature dimensions. ## Growing Conditions Choose full sun or part shade and moist, well-drained soil. Give the branches room to hang without obstructing paths or mowing. ## Maintenance Prune after flowering if shaping is needed, and remove shoots that arise below the graft because they will not retain the weeping form.
