Large shrub or small tree is native to the Rocky Mountains. Large racemes of white flowers that attract butterflies have a strong heady aroma. Black fruit is 1/2" and is loved by birds. Fruit has an astringent taste, being both somewhat sour and somewhat bitter. When very ripe, fruit is sweeter and can be made into jams, jellies and syrup.
