Sucker Punch® Chokecherry

Sucker Punch® chokecherry (Prunus 'P002S') is a red-leaf chokecherry hybrid introduced by Plant Select. The medium-sized tree has green leaves in spring that mature to dark reddish-purple, and its non-suckering growth distinguishes it from many chokecherries. Abundant small, fragrant white flowers appear in spring, followed by deep-purple fruit in late July. The fruit can be used for jam and jelly or left for songbirds. Plant Select lists this cultivar for full sun and clay, loam, or sandy soil, with moderate to dry water needs and hardiness in zones 3–8. Pruning needs are usually light; remove damaged limbs and shape the crown as needed. Follow accepted arboricultural practices as the tree matures.
