About Cherry Palm

Cherry palm, Pseudophoenix sargentii, is a slow-growing tropical palm valued for its blue-green crown and distinctive trunk. UF/IFAS describes it as a Florida native for zones 10–11 that can reach 25 feet, while the Florida Native Plant Society lists a typical spread of 8–10 feet ([UF/IFAS profile](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/EP649); [FNPS plant profile](https://www.fnps.org/plant/pseudophoenix-sargentii)). ## Form and placement This solitary palm makes a specimen for a warm coastal garden, a spacious entry, or a large container while young. Its stiff, feather-shaped leaves form a relatively open crown above the smooth trunk, so allow room for the mature spread and long fronds. The species is native to the Florida Keys, the Caribbean, Belize, and the Yucatán Peninsula. ## Growing conditions Plant in full sun and fast-draining sandy or limestone soil. UF/IFAS notes that it prefers basic sandy soil and grows poorly in acidic conditions; the Florida Native Plant Society also records limestone substrates and moderate salt-spray tolerance. The palm is not suited to cold winters or flooding with salty water. ## Maintenance Growth is slow, and established palms tolerate dry periods, so avoid frequent irrigation in a well-drained site. Water during establishment, then adjust to rainfall and soil drainage. Use reputable nursery stock for this Florida native, and keep the plant away from areas where its mature leaves would obstruct paths or overhead clearance.
