Ptychosperma waitianum is a tropical palm native to New Guinea, where it grows in wet tropical forest on hillsides and ridges. Its upright stems carry distinctive reddish emerging leaves, followed by fleshy black fruit.
## Garden Setting
Kew records this species from southeastern Papua New Guinea, from near sea level to about 430 metres, in tropical rainforest habitat. A botanical account describes a solitary stem about 4–6 metres long; that stem measurement is not a guaranteed mature garden height. The [Kew Plants of the World Online profile](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:669462-1) confirms the accepted name and native range, while the [North Bengal University account](https://ir.nbu.ac.in/server/api/core/bitstreams/230bf85c-0905-49d3-8423-b20efb3f583d/content) notes the red new leaves and black fruit. This warm-climate species is best suited to frost-free tropical gardens or protected conservatories; its natural wet-forest habitat favors steady warmth and moisture.
## Maintenance
Provide a warm, humid position and evenly moist but freely draining growing medium. Protect from cold and drying winds, and allow room for the solitary palm stem and broad crown.
