Pomegranate shrubs are grown for edible fruit and can be trained into small trees. The fruiting species also makes an ornamental planting, with a naturally bushy form and stiff, sometimes spiny branches. [Utah State University Extension](https://extension.usu.edu/yardandgarden/research/pomegranate-fruit-of-the-desert) gives a pomegranate height of 12–15 feet when tree-trained and cultivation guidance; [Kew](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/554129-1) places Punica granatum in Lythraceae.
## Growing Conditions
Pomegranates grow in full sun or part shade and suit USDA zones 8–11. They thrive in well-drained loamy soil and tolerate alkaline conditions. Their natural form is a bushy shrub, though training can develop a small tree.
## Maintenance
Once established, plants tolerate drought, but regular deep irrigation supports fruit quality. Prune lightly each year to renew fruiting wood, and remove old shoots when needed.
